New York City FC Beats D.C. United 1-0 on Decision Day

New York City FC defeated D.C. United 1-0 at Audi Field on November 7, 2026, with Talles Magno scoring in the 87th minute of the MLS regular-season finale. The late winner secured three points for the visitors on Decision Day, although both Eastern Conference clubs had already been eliminated from playoff contention.

The New York City FC official match report detailed the decisive counterattack, which began with Tayvon Gray’s defensive block and ended with Talles Magno’s 87th-minute winner.

Talles Magno Scores Late Winner

The decisive move began when Tayvon Gray made a sliding defensive block deep inside NYCFC’s defensive third, stopping a D.C. United attack and directing the ball toward substitute BΓ©nie TraorΓ©.

TraorΓ© turned quickly and advanced through the middle of the field, launching a three-on-one counterattack against the retreating home defense. He then delivered a pass toward Magno on the left side of the attacking third.

Magno cut inside his defender onto his right foot before driving a low shot past goalkeeper Jordan Farr into the bottom right corner. The goal, assisted by TraorΓ©, broke the deadlock with three minutes remaining in regulation time.

NYCFC’s ability to turn a defensive intervention into a scoring opportunity proved decisive in a match that had remained goalless through the opening 86 minutes.

Match Possession and Shot Statistics

New York City FC controlled 62% of possession compared with D.C. United’s 38%, completing 485 accurate passes. NYCFC recorded 13 shots to D.C. United’s 11.

Despite NYCFC’s greater share of possession, D.C. United remained competitive in attacking opportunities, finishing only two shots behind the visitors.

Farr made three saves during the match, while NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese kept a clean sheet. Freese’s interventions helped prevent the home side from converting its attacking opportunities before Magno delivered the decisive goal.

Final Eastern Conference Standings

The victory extended NYCFC’s unbeaten run to five matches, although the club missed the playoffs for only the third time in its 11-season history, following 2015 and 2023.

New York City FC finished its 34-game regular-season campaign in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, recording 10 wins, 12 draws and 12 losses for 42 points.

D.C. United concluded its season in 14th place with seven wins, 12 draws and 15 losses, collecting 33 points and extending its playoff absence to seven consecutive seasons.

The result left both clubs outside the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs despite NYCFC’s improved form over its final five matches.

MLS Prepares for Calendar Changes

The fixture also marked the end of the traditional autumn regular-season format for the two clubs as Major League Soccer prepares for a significant calendar transition.

MLS plans a 14-game transition season beginning in February 2027 as the league prepares to adopt a July-to-May calendar.

The shortened competition will bridge the existing schedule and the new seasonal structure, giving both clubs their next competitive campaign following their unsuccessful 2026 playoff qualification efforts.
