Jarred Kelenic Elects Free Agency After Yankees Stint

Jarred Kelenic elected free agency during the first week of November 2026, leaving the New York Yankees organisation after completing the season without receiving a call-up to New York’s major league roster. The 27-year-old outfielder, a six-year MLB veteran, finished his season with the club’s Triple-A affiliate.

The departure ended a short stint that began when the New York Yankees signed Kelenic to a minor league contract on August 29, 2026, after he cleared waivers following his release by the Texas Rangers. He was assigned to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the International League.

Kelenic never appeared for the Yankees’ major league team. His departure followed a difficult offensive stretch at Triple-A, where he struggled to regain the production that once made him one of baseball’s highly regarded young prospects.

Kelenic’s Triple-a Performance with Yankees

Over 85 at-bats with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Kelenic batted .200 with two home runs and a .556 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).

The numbers contrasted with his earlier 2026 minor league performance in the Texas Rangers organization, where he had batted .373 for Triple-A Round Rock before his release.

Kelenic also struggled during his major league appearances earlier that season. Across 36 games split between the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers, he batted .219 with one home run and six RBIs, including 19 games with Chicago and 17 with Texas.

Former Top Prospect Faces Career Decision

Originally the sixth overall draft pick, Kelenic made his major league debut with the Seattle Mariners in 2021 before spending two seasons with the Atlanta Braves.

He has appeared in 443 major league games, with a career batting average of .211. His experience across several organizations gives prospective clubs an established MLB record to evaluate alongside his recent minor league performance.

Kelenic can now pursue opportunities with other MLB organizations for the 2027 season. His next team and any potential spring training invitation have not been announced.
