Shillong, Jun 23: The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Meghalaya is not rushing its candidate selection for the impending Lok Sabha by-election. State party president Rikman G Momin announced that the organization will remain patient until the Election Commission of India discloses the official voting schedule. Momin clarified that the state branch will not independently choose the candidate, as the central BJP leadership retains the ultimate authority to select and approve the final nominee.
When questioned about whether former West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang, who recently migrated to the party, is being considered for the ticket, Momin stated that no official talks have occurred. He reiterated that the central BJP leaders will deliberate on the matter and make the definitive choice.
Currently, the BJP is focused on its structural preparations and sees no reason to hurry since the Election Commission has not designated the official voting dates.
The parliamentary seat for the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency fell vacant following the untimely demise of sitting MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon on February 19 of this year, necessitating the upcoming by-election.
At present, the primary objective of the party is to reinforce its presence at the booth level. The state leadership emphasizes delivering central government welfare schemes directly to the residents of Meghalaya.
