Yellowstone Closes Three Main Entrances for Winter on November 1

Yellowstone National Park will close its West, South and East entrances and most interior roads to regular vehicles on 1 November 2026, ending the main driving season, according to Wyoming Public Radio.

The National Park Service confirmed that 31 October 2026 is the final scheduled day for visitors to drive most park roads. The seasonal closures allow crews to prepare for winter operations and the transition to snowmobile and snowcoach travel.

Northern Entrances Remain Open to Vehicles

Yellowstone will remain accessible by car through the North and Northeast entrances in Montana, connecting Gardiner with Cooke City and Silver Gate.

The route passes through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley. It remains open throughout the year, weather permitting, providing the park’s only regular winter driving corridor.

The National Park Service warns that temporary restrictions can occur without notice when dangerous driving conditions develop.

Winter Travel Begins in December

Yellowstone’s snowmobile and snowcoach season is scheduled to begin on 15 December 2026, when designated interior routes are expected to reopen for winter transport.

According to the National Park Service, winter access is weather-dependent. Visitors should expect limited services, remain flexible with travel plans and carry blankets, cold-weather supplies and sufficient fuel.

Drivers can check recorded road conditions at 307-344-2117 or receive mobile alerts by texting 82190 to 888-777.

Communities surrounding Yellowstone, including Gardiner, West Yellowstone and Cody, remain open for visitors during the winter season.
