DETROIT, 27 October 2026: General Motors announced plans to transfer its common stock listing from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq Global Select Market, ending its long association with the NYSE.
The automaker will retain its existing ticker symbol, GM. Shares are expected to trade on the NYSE through November 16 before beginning trading on Nasdaq on November 17, 2026.
GM Links Nasdaq Move to Technology Strategy
GM Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson explained the decision in the company’s announcement, reported by Quartz.
“GM’s customer-focused, technology-driven strategy is creating value for our stockholders, making Nasdaq a natural home for our listing as we grow.”
GM’s technology business includes Super Cruise, its driver assistance system, and other software services. The company is seeking to highlight those operations alongside its established vehicle manufacturing business.
According to Electric Vehicles, the transfer makes GM eligible for potential inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 Index, although joining the index is not guaranteed.
Existing shareholders will not need to take action because of the listing change.
GM Follows Walmart’s Move to Nasdaq
The shift follows Walmart’s move to Nasdaq on 9 December 2025. Walmart subsequently joined the Nasdaq-100 in January 2026, although a similar outcome is not guaranteed for GM.
The announcement followed Anthropic’s 26 October public IPO filing, which identified Nasdaq as the proposed home for its shares. As reported by Yahoo Finance, Anthropic had not announced a confirmed trading date, although November had been reported as a potential debut window.
What to Watch Next
GM’s final scheduled NYSE trading session is 16 November 2026. Trading under the unchanged GM ticker is expected to begin on Nasdaq the following day.
