Veteran character actor Richard Riehle passes away at 78
TMZ, which broke the story on 19 October 2026, reported that friends of Richard Riehle said he “died of natural causes last Thursday in Los Angeles”. Variety independently confirmed that he died of natural causes on 15 October in Los Angeles at the age of 78.

His career and signature roles
Born on 12 May 1948 in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Riehle began acting at the Meadow Brook Theatre in Rochester, Michigan before his film role in Rooster Cogburn (1975), according to Variety.
One of his best-known roles was Tom Smykowski, the Initech employee in Mike Judge’s Office Space (1999). Across nearly five decades he amassed more than 400 film and television credits, including Walt Finnerty on Grounded for Life, Batai in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode ‘The Inner Light’, Carlson in Of Mice and Men (1992), the guard in The Fugitive, and Bill Cozbi in Bridesmaids (2011).

The Santa Claus count dispute
PM News Nigeria reported that Riehle portrayed Santa Claus in 11 different projects, including A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas and episodes of Two and a Half Men and The League. Variety, by contrast, put the figure at eight projects: five films, two television shows and one television movie. The count is unresolved; both figures are reported here as their outlets stated them.
