New Mexico Police Rescue 10 People, 4 Dogs in Floods
The New Mexico State Police Aircraft Unit rescued 10 people and four dogs during flooding across the state since October 23, 2026, according to an agency news release published on October 30. The operations included aerial rescues in Farmington and Socorro, where flood conditions made some locations difficult or impossible to reach.
The rescues involved two different helicopter extraction methods. Crews used hoists to reach people in inaccessible locations, while the unit’s ABLE 7 helicopter was able to land during other recovery operations.
How Helicopter Crews Reached Stranded Residents
According to the New Mexico State Police news release published by Los Alamos Reporter, eight rescues used helicopter hoists.
The equipment allowed personnel to recover people from areas where conventional access was restricted.
In two additional rescues, ABLE 7 landed and safely recovered two individuals. The release did not identify the precise landing locations or provide a separate breakdown of the dogs’ recoveries.
The agency described multiple aerial rescue operations over the preceding week, rather than a single emergency response. Farmington and Socorro were specifically identified among the flood-affected areas where its aircraft crews operated.
Flood Damage Complicated Ground Access
The State Police explained that rising floodwater and damaged roads can prevent ground-based emergency responders from reaching people in danger. Washed-out bridges and isolated communities create further obstacles when rescue teams need to enter affected areas.
Helicopters provide an alternative when roads cannot be used. They can reach hazardous locations, assess conditions from the air and deploy specialised personnel to assist people who need immediate help.
The distinction between the two extraction methods matters during flooding. Hoist equipment allows crews to reach people where landing is difficult or impossible, while a helicopter landing provides another means of recovery when conditions permit.
The agency’s account documents the use of both methods during these operations.
Aircraft Unit’s Wider Emergency Role
The NMSP Aircraft Unit supports law enforcement activities across New Mexico, including aerial operations, search and rescue and assistance during emergencies. Its responsibilities extend beyond flooding to other incidents requiring aircraft support.
Those capabilities were central to the latest response because aircraft could assist residents in places that ground teams might struggle to access. The operations also demonstrated how different recovery techniques can be used according to the conditions encountered by flight crews.
New Mexico State Police said its personnel work alongside local, state and emergency response partners to protect lives and assist communities during emergencies. The agency highlighted the specialised training of aircraft personnel and the importance of aerial support during natural disasters.
The October 30 release documented the completed rescues but did not announce a further operation or provide a timetable for additional missions. Its account focused on the people and animals recovered and the aircraft capabilities used to reach them.
